I would like to say they did an excellent job with our garage build. They were very prompt on getting to our home early each morning ready to work.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new garage cost in Boston?

HomeGuide's national figures put a garage at $15,000 to $80,000, and most two-car garages at $25,000 to $60,000. Those are not our prices, and HomeGuide gives no Boston figure. We price your lot in a written quote after a visit.

Do I need a permit to build a garage in Massachusetts?

Yes. The state building code exempts only small one-story sheds and similar buildings of 200 square feet or less. A garage needs a permit from your city or town's building office.

How deep do garage footings go around Boston?

The Massachusetts residential code sets the frost line at 48 inches, so footings and frost walls go that deep.

Can I put an apartment over my garage?

Often. Massachusetts allows one ADU of up to 900 square feet by right in single-family zoning districts, within local rules. Boston has its own zoning code, so we check your address.

Can you replace my old one-car garage?

Yes. We take down worn garages, pour a new foundation and build a new one, often bigger if zoning allows.

Do you build carports?

Yes. On lots too tight for a garage, a carport framed for Boston snow can give covered parking.

Do I need a permit to build a garage?

Almost always. New garages, additions and conversions need building permits and often zoning review. We check what your lot needs before work starts.

Detached or attached: which costs less?

It depends on the lot. Attached garages share a wall but must tie into the house; detached garages need their own four walls. We price both when the lot allows.

How long does a garage take to build?

Most garages take several weeks of work once permits are in hand, depending on size and how finished the inside is.

Can you build a room or apartment above a garage?

Often, where zoning allows. It needs a stronger frame and foundation, stairs and its own permits. We check the rules for your address.
